Blovinski in top form for cup
Special correspondent z Dunedin Blovinski could put his stamp on the Dunedin Gold Cup at the Otago Racing Club’s meeting at Wingatui today after a fine run of form this season. A member of the Riccarton stable of Tom Lalor, who prepared last year’s Dunedin Cup winner, His Latest, Blovinski has gone from strength to strength this season, winning five of his nine starts. The four-year-old Palatable—Margaret’s Glory gelding beat several of his Dunedin Cup rivals decisively over 2000 m at Riccarton on Waitangi Day. He carried 54.5 kg that
day and he has one kilo more today. Beau Bandy ran him to three parts of a length after making the pace. Last season’s Riverton Cup winner is in the field as is Ten Winks, Noble Boa and Royal Sceptre, the next three home. At Riccarton Ten Winks and Noble Boa finished well and the 400 m longer journey today should be in their favour. Ten Winks numbered the Wairarapa and Opunake Cups among her six wins last season. Noble Boa won the Invercargill Cup in 1984 and 1985.
Royal Sceptre could be expected to be improved with the outing as he had not raced for four weeks,
since finishing an unlucky third to Sea Swift and Bi Noble in the Invercargill Cup. He won the Waikouaiti Cup five days earlier.
A soft track will favour Duaprove, a dashing winner at Omakau last month and a good fourth in the Dunedin Cup 12 months ago. Noble Ella, a winner in a lower grade on the first day and a half-sister by Noble Bijou to the 1969 Dunedin Cup winner, Wyella, is a lightweight prospect. Treaura, a winner at Gore last month, and Million Joys and Double Lang are other possibilities from down in the weights.
