Garuda, the national airline of Indonesia, is seeking permission to fly to New Zealand later this year. The airline’s president, Mr R. A. J. Lumenta, told me in Jakarta last week that the new service would initially provide a weekly flight from Indonesia to Auckland, via Brisbane. Asked if he had considered using Christchurch Airport, Mr Lumenta shook his head and
said: “It must be Auckland; we don’t know much about Christchurch.” He confirmed that Govern-ment-to-Government talks about the link had already been held. Garuda has a fleet of 74 aircraft, Including six Boeing 7475, six DClOs, nine Airbus A3oos, and 19 DC9s. It employs 7460 people. The airline currently serves four Australian cities — Sydney, Melbourne, Perth, and Darwin.
