Canty swimming records tumble
Four Canterbury individual records and two relay records were broken in the New Brighton Businessmen’s Trophy swimming carnival at Queen Elizabeth II Park on Saturday evening. Among the new marks were three long-course times recorded by Nichola West, who had broken six Canterbury records at the under-age championships the previous week-end. Competing in the 10years girls’ section the Wharenui swimmer broke her own record of Imin 17.57 s for the 100 m backstroke with a time of 1:16.07. She also set new records for the 100 m freestyle and the 100 m butterfly with times of 1:06.27 (1:07.58) and 1:17.55 (1:18.89) respectively. Since last November Dallas Hibbs (New Brigh-
ton Hertz) has broken 15 Canterbury records and he added another during the week-end, beating his old mark of 1:11 for the 10-years boys’ 100 m backstroke with a time of 1:10.38. Both the relay records were broken by the New Brighton 13-years boys’ team of Matthew Davenport, Hibbs, Joseph Ward and Hayden Woolley. Particularly praiseworthy was the time of 1:55.71 the New Brighton team put up in the 4 x 50m freestyle relay. The old mark of 1:58.10, set by Wharenui, had stood since 1979. Later in the evening the team set another record in the 4 x 50m medley relay with a time of 2:12.92 (2:14.16). All have qualified in high positions for the national age-group championships in Feilding this week-end.
