Tuna fee tops SIM
NZPAAAPHoniara, Solomon Islands The Solomon Islands Government has imposed a fee of sAustl.s million ($1.95 million) a year on any United States tuna boat wishing to fish in its 200-mile exclusive economic zone. A Government spokesman said this fee was confirmed at the recent Forum Fisheries talks in Hawaii attended by 16 South Pacific countries. The annual fee is the highest in the region. The high fees have been set in response to poaching in the Western Pacific, which led to the United States boat Jeanette Diana being confiscated by Solomon Island authorities in late 1984. She was later resold to her owners for sAust77o,ooo ($1 million).
