Sentence for theft of cheque forms

PA Dunedin A man who provided cheque forms for a $600,000 national fraud has been sentenced in the District Court in Dunedin to six months non-residen-tial periodic detention. Robert Bruce Berryman, aged 27, a machine operator, was convicted in January- on a charge of theft as a servant when he admitted stealing 2000 blank cheques, valued at $l4O, from his employer, Whitcoulls, Ltd.

Sentencing Berryman, this week; Judge Blaikie said that when he had first read the probation report, he thought the defendant had been an active participant in a serious scheme of dishonesty. However, after carefully listening to counsel, Mr Stephen O’Driscoll, the Judge said, he accepted that the defendant was being sentenced for the theft of cheque forms only.
