French warning for N.Z.
NZPA-AFP Pontoise, France
The chairman of France’s Right-wing RPR party, Jacques Chirac, warned yesterday that New Zealand must clarify its relation with France in the wake of the Rainbow Warrior bombing. Mr Chirac, who is expected to be a candidate at the presidential election in two years, said the Prime Minister, Mr Lange, should not maintain a policy that would challenge France’s legitimate interests in the Pacific over the last 15 years. "We import lamb and butter from New Zealand to the detriment of French producers,” he said. “New Zealand must choose, and we demand the return of two French officers who have committed no terrorist act and were only obeying orders,” he said. New Zealand seeks SUSIO million ($18.7 million) in damages.
