Advisory council gains two

PA Wellington Mrs Poko Morgan and Mr Tino Meleisea have been appointed to the Minister of Pacific Island Affairs’ Advisory Council. Mrs Morgan is a resource teacher at the Multicultural Resource Centre, Tokoroa, and is a former member of the Cook Islands Legislative Assembly.

She is also chairwoman of the Pacific Island Education Committee for Tokoroa and works on promoting Cook Islands language and culture, says a statement from the Minister’s office.

She fills a vacancy left by the death late last year of Mr Ratu Daniela, of Auckland. Mr Meleisea, a Samoan who has lived in New Zealand for 30 years, is an executive officer in the Labour Department. He takes a leading role

in a number of community organisations in his home town of Porirua, including being chairman of the Parumoana Community College Council, acting chairman of the Porirua Law Resource Centre, and a member of the Samoan Advisory Council.

He replaces Miss Louisa Crawley who has returned recently started work as deputy director of the Pacific Island Affairs Unit. The 12-member council was formed last year to make recommendations to the Minister on matters involving the social, cultural or economic life of Pacific Island people in New Zealand. It comprises two members each from the Cook Islands, and the Fijian, Niuean, Tokelauan, Tongan and Western Samoan communities.
