‘Strike-mad’ unions need ‘firm hand’

PA Tauranga The New Zealand trade union movement has gone “strike-mad,” says the Opposition spokesman on labour, Mr Townshend. "Unions are obsessed with a strike mentality, self-interest and their solidarity,” the member of Parliament for Kaimai said. "I believe the present spate of strikes in this country is a result of a lack of authority and firmness by the Minister of Labour, Mr Rodger,” he said. “Throughout the latest wage round, Mr Rodger failed, to ensure unions

conformed to industrial law by refraining from strike action during negotiations.

“Such was the success of unions through their strike tactics that it is now becoming the norm for every grievance — be it within the health service, freezing industry, or Air New Zealand. “In the reinstated compulsory unionism law, rank-and-file members have little redress from union strike directives. “The time has come for Mr Rodger to excercise some of his powers in New Zealand’s interest, or to resign his portfolio to somebody who will.”
