Strong field for cycling

BRYCE SIMS
. A large, high-class field has entered the Canterbury track cycling championships which will begin at Denton Park this evening, and continue during the week-end. Brian Fowler, of the Woolston Club, should triumph over Murray Steele in the 1000 m time trial. Though Steele is the national champion in this event, he has not shown good form on the track this season, and will have to pull out a bit extra to beat Fowler. In the Junior 1000 m time trial, the in-form Nigel Donnelly is likely to win, but he will be pushed hard by Richard Scott (West Coast South Island) who has sprung a few surprises this season.
Wayne Eyre and Jon Andrews, who have been promoted to the senior ranks, should provide stiff competition for Steele and William Rastrick in the sprint events. The 25km points race will probably be a benefit for Fowler, the national champion, who has a mortgage on this event. However, Aaron Lauder should keep him honest.
In the Novice section, Grant Kiesanowski is favoured to take out a number of events. He could be hard-pressed by Clayton Gyde and Tim Carswell, who are improving as the season progresses. All the riders will be looking for solid performances before the national championships which will start on March 5 in Christchurch.
