“Plugging the brain drain”
Sir, — lan Macfarlane’s claims are too generalised. Has he tried living on an “overgenerous” bursary? Does he have figures to back his claims that universities are "crowded” with students studying “esoteric” subjects? Saying that more should study "relevant” subjects is absurd. Future teachers, etc., are more than catered for, and still many will find employment difficulties. Limiting entry and making things work on a “user pays” system would give unfair advantages to the offspring of the rich, making tertiary education more socially biased than it already is. His solution for those who wish to broaden their horizon, rather than take a job, is draconian. It is because so many employers are so narrow-minded that so many graduates must leave New Zealand. Tertiary education is more than just a dollar in some businessman’s pocket. — Yours, etc.,
W. S. McCALLUM. February 7, 1986.
