Winnie Mandela stays optimistic
NZPA-Reuter Johannesburg Winnie Mandela has renewed speculation that the South African Government will free her imprisoned husband, Nelson Mandela, saying his release is just a question of timing.
She said as she left Cape Town’s maximum security Pollsmoor prison after a visit: “We all know that it is an inevitable situation. They have to release him. The problem is just when.” Mrs Mandela gave no reasons to support her optimism for her husband’s release. Mr Mandela, aged 68, jailed for nearly a quarter of a century for plotting to overthrow the Government, is still acknowleged as the leader of the outlawed African National Congress.
Mrs Mandela said the Government had not said anything new to suggest that they were now prepared to free Mr Mandela. Mrs Mandela, asked whether her husband would insist on returning to the family home in Soweto from which she is now banned, said: “Yes. Like any other prisoner in the world."
