Mr Burdon decries demotion
The demotion of two Opposition spokesmen has been decried by the member of Parliament for Fendalton, Mr Philip Burdon.
Mr Burdon said last evening that he regretted the way Messrs George Gair and Winston Peters had been treated. He doubted that the move in demoting them
would help National in its move towards reconciliation in the wake of the rift between the party leaders and the former leader, Sir Robert Muldoon and a former Cabinet Minister, Dr lan Shearer. Mr Burdon said he did not believe the changes were an accurate reflection of the abilities of Messrs Gair and Peters.
To attribute demotions to loyalty to Sir Robert was an “unfair interpretation.” Mr Gair had always been a hard-working honest toiler for the party. Mr Peters had actually moved with Mr Burdon for an early debate on the leadership issue when Sir Robert was leader. Mr Burdon said he thought his own appoint-
ment as associate spokesman on trade and industry might be more important than that as spokesman on Customs. “I would have liked to have had trade and industry, but I am pleased to be in an area where I believe I can make a contribution,” he said. He was formerly spokesman on health.
