Eight years jail for rape, abduction
PA Auckland A gang member, aged 18, was yesterday jailed for eight years for the abduction and rape of a girl, aged 16, in August, last year. Agalei Tauvaga Letele, unemployed, of Mangere, was aged 17 when he helped to force the girl from her house and raped her in the back of a van. He then forced her into another house through a window, kept her there for the night and raped her again. Mr Justice Sinclair said in the High Court at Auckland that people must be protected in their homes.
He said that if Letele wanted to commit a mansized offence he would pay a man-sized penalty. Counsel, Ms Kate
McNelley, asked the Court for a lenient jail sentence so the young man would not fall deeper into gang and criminal associations in prison.
She said that Letele was drunk on the night of the rape. Although he knew the girl was unwilling to have intercourse, he denied using violence on her.
He pleaded guilty to the rape before a trial. His Honour said that Letele had regularly "thumbed his nose” at the law. At 18, the Mongrel Mob associate was bordering on becoming an alcoholic.
“The public must know that the courts will deal unmercifully with people who behave as you did,” he told Letele.
