Safety blitz on construction companies

PA Auckland Construction „ companies which flout safety regulations will be the target of a Labour Department blitz. The Auckland supervisor of construction safety for the Labour Department, Mr John Jordan, said yesterday that some companies repeatedly breached the Construction Act

One company was convicted in the District Court at Auckland this week for a fourth time on charges relating to a lack of adequate safety precautions.

Mr Jordan said the de-

partment’s resources were stretched by the Auckland building boom, but a special campaign would be mounted this year.

Safety supervisors who failed to carry out their duty risked having their certificate of competence revoked, he said.

Construction companies could be told ■ to replace a supervisor the department believed was failing to ensure proper safety standards.

Mr Jordan said buildings were being erected at speed, often with insufficient attention to accident prevention.
