Softball classic
Old Boys from Tirtiaru and Saints from Blenheim are among the 12 men’s teams entered in- the three-day Countdown Classic, organised by the Burnside Softball Club, which begins at English Park this evening.
The tournament,. which offers about $lOOO in prize money, will be played initially in four sections with’ post-section play culiminating in a grand final at 2.30 on Sunday. ‘ Among the Christchurch teams entered is the new club champion, Tait Electronics United, along with Countdown Burnside,
A.B.L. Suburbs and imperial Merivale.
The biggest challenge to the ' local teams should come from the South Canterbury club, Old Boys, which has a good pitchercatcher combination in John • Rouse and • Peter McMinn. ’ •
Graeme Anderson, the organiser and co-coach of the Burnside . permier men’s team, said that attempts to’ attract the top clubs from Dunedin and Invercargill had been unsuccessful.
The Dunedin teams were not allowed dispensation from their own club competition.
