Remark by Mr Kidd an insult, says Corso
PA Wellington Corso has laid a complaint with the Race Relations Conciliator against the National Party’s defence spokesman, Mr Doug Kidd. The complaint arises from a remark Mr Kidd made (quoted in the “Evening Post,” on January 28) about New Zealand’s being in danger of having “an African ser-geant-major-led Army in
no time” if high quality training were not given to senior officers. “Mr Kidd’s comment is an insult to African people and destructive of New Zealand’s relationship with African States,” said Corso’s chairman, the Rev. Don Borrie. “He has branded a contingent of more than 50 distinct nations and 500 million people with his negative and false stereotype."
Mr Borrie said Corso made its complaint under the Race Relations Act because it considered Mr Kidd’s remark encouraged "racial tension here in New Zealand by promoting an attitude of white Western superiority.”
Corso will also write to the Leader of the Opposition, Mr McLay, expressing its concern about Mr Kidd’s comment.
