PA Wellington The Greenpeace organisation has accused Antarctic officials of trying to stifle criticism after two Scott Base staff members were sent home early for speaking out against the treatment of private visiters to the base.
The decision to sack one staff member and send another home early was a “wholly inappropriate and draconian action,” Greenpeace said. The group called for the reinstatement of the two men.
The men were reported to have written letters to newspapers complaining about the official treatment of visiting members of the Footsteps of Scott and Greenpeace expeditions.
The Antarctic campaign co-ordinator for
Greenpeace, Ms SusanJane Owen, said the members who visited Scott Base had been treated shabbily and in contradiction of the spirit of cooperation which was supposed to exist between all people working in the Antarctic.
