Canterbury Belle dominates Riccarton feature

By

J. J. BOYLE

With Canterbury Belle in the lineup a second thought about the likely outcome of tomorrow’s South Island Thoroughbred Breeders’ Stakes at Riccarton seems to be superfluous.

Last season’s One Thousand Guineas and Brisbane Elders Stakes winner has been fitted for a welcome appearance on her home track with two races on her present campaign. They yielded a close second in the weight-for-age Timaru Cup and a comfortable win in the Smelter Stakes at Invercargill. In the meantime she has thrived and impressed in everything she has done in training, also in winning at Motukarara race trials. To match her impressive work pieces she is displaying the demeanour of a thoroughly relaxed athlete, which Invites the opinion that she will continue to be a force when she tries for longer trips than the 1800 m of the first leg of the Canterbury

Jockey Club’s T.A.B. double. Ten Winks is back from the North Island for a race she won for Paddy Busuttin’s Foxton stable last year, and Dainty Dish, the next closest in the weights, is being given her chance with confidence of at least a placed performance after her third behind In the Glen and Canterbury Belle in the Timaru Cup. Dainty Dish was about three and a half lengths behind Canterbury Belle in the feature 1600 m at Washdyke. Under scale weights she has had to give Canterbury Belle Ikg. This time there is a turn around of 4kg in Dainty Dish’s favour, but that should be offset by the improvement in Canterbury Belle’s race fitness for this one.

The Riccarton jockey, Chris Johnson, who skilfully partnered Samasaan for that Wellington Cup victory last Saturday, has prospects of a sprint victory on Sound Note in the Craven Plate, second leg of tomorrow’s T.A.B. double. Sound Note won twice on the West Coast holiday circuit showing easy mastery of 1400 m and seven rivals over 1400 m at Omoto at her last start. La Pomme and Pokare, other winners for Canterbury stables in their holiday racing, are two of the other obvious chances. La Pomme was a clearcut winner over 1400 m in her first of two starts at the Vincent meeting and followed up with a creditable third. Pokare did not quite manage 2000 m at Vincent

at his last start, but won over 1400 m at Invercargill the time before.
