‘Murderer’ not even playing possum

PA Wellington The Wellington police began a hunt for an armed murderer early on Monday only to discover two innocent opossum hunters were "body” and “murderer.” The misunderstanding began when a taxi-driver

called the police after he saw what appeared to be a body with an armed man standing nearby in a Karori street about 1 a.m., said Inspector Owen Dance.

The armed offenders squad was called out for what looked like a difficult night. However, the police discovered the body was an opossum hunter who had dropped his torch and was lying on the ground searching for the batteries, Mr Dance said. His companion was standing nearby holding his rifle. • The two friends were on their way to shoot opossums in bush at Karori Park.
