British poll tax plan
NZPA-Reuter London The British Government revealed plans yesterday for a new poll tax to be levied on everyone over the age of 18. The plans, issued in a discussion document, envisage the phasing out of a tax paid by houseowners in favour of a “community charge.” Labour Party politicians
reacted angrily to the proposals. Labour’s environment spokesman, John Cunningham, said they amounted to a tax on every adult regardless of income or ability to pay. The Conservative Government has made it clear since it came to power in 1979 that it intends to reform the tax system.
