Earl brings friend to Kawerau

By ROBIN CHARTERIS in London. The Earl of Mount Edgcumbe, the New Zealand farmer who became heir to a 200-year-old British title has taken the new woman in his life to meet his family and friends, according to a London gossip columnist. Writing in the "Daily Express,” the columnist, William Hickey, said the Earl and Mrs Beryl Cotterell, a barmaid, were staying in Kawerau until June.

A year ago, the Earl issued a statement saying his wife, Lady Joan, the Countess of Edgcumbe, had moved out of the family mansion, near Plymouth, and was living with an odd-job man. The Earl was at that time friendly with Mrs

Cotterell, aged 44, who worked behind the bar at the Edgcumbe Arms Hotel and who became his regular week-end house guest. Mr Hickey quotes one of the Earl’s five daughters, Lady Vanessa, aged 16, as saying that Mrs Cotterell was interested in seeing New Zealand so he decided to take her along. Lady Vanessa and Lady Megan, aged 21, and Lady Vanessa’s boyfriend are looking after the family estate. The Earl had been “under a lot of pressure,” said Lady Megan. “He’ll be introducing Beryl to relations, sure, but he’s going to take her hot-rodding, too.

“I don’t think he’ll come back with her as a wife. At least, if he does, I’ll disown him. He’s aged

10 years since all this blew up,” she said. Mr Hickey said Lady Megan, when asked about her mother, the Countess, replied she was “just fine.”

“There’s no divorce. They’ve just separated for a couple of years,” she said.
