Shuttle proven
NZPA-Reuter New York The space shuttle Challenger was the proven workhorse of the American fleet of reusable spaceplanes. Challenger, the second of four winged spacecraft in the SUSIO billion ($l9 billion) shuttle programme, already had made nine successful round trips into space, more than any other, when disaster struck.
Built as a test vehicle, Challenger was eventually fitted to be an operational shuttle when the first winged orbiter Columbia proved so successful on its four test flights in space. Although Columbia weighed more than the three craft which followed it into space, all four spaceplanes were almost identical in design and construction.
Each is 37 metres long and has a wing span of 24 metres.
