Briton tipped to raise treaty row

NZPA London Britain’s new military head, Admiral of the Fleet, Sir John Fieldhouse, is expected to canvass the A.N.Z.U.S. row on a visit to New Zealand in three weeks.

Sir John was appointed Chief of Defence Staff late last year and official sources say he will raise the question of Royal Navy visits, which appear to be ruled out under New Zealand’s proposed antinuclear legislation.

New Zealand officials have had intense discussions with Britain over the anti-nuclear legislation before a Parliamentary select committee. In December, Britain’s Foreign Office said that the New Zealand Nuclear

Free Zone, Disarmament and Arms Control Bill “illustrated the anxieties we have been discussing with the New Zealand Government.” The British Government hoped any legislation that might eventually pass into law would take account of close links between the Royal Navy and New Zealand.

The Ministry of Defence said that Sir John would be in New Zealand from February 14 to February 19, and he would go on to Australia. He would meet defence chiefs in both countries.

A Ministry spokesman said the visit had been planned for many months and its purpose was “routine discussions on subjects of mutual concern.”
