Tasman seeks third win
Although Tasman. will be warmly fancied to score its third successive win in the South Island under-21 golf championship at Alexandra this week-end, Canterbury can at least hope to improve on its third placings of the last two years. Tasman has developed a strong nucleus of junior golfers and its victory last year was by an amazing 67 shots. Teams of six from Tasman, Canterbury, Aorangi, Otago and Southland compete in the 72hole stroke tournament, the best four scores in each round counting towards the team total. Richard Hurley, who made his senior debut for Canterbury last year, will contest his second South Island under-21 championship, as will Jason Sincock, the blond-headed Avondale junior who was
unbeaten at No. 3 for his club in the Woodward Cup competition last season. The tournament, however, will be a new experience for the four below Hurley and Sincock in the playing order. Mark Tamuta, the only member of the team without a Woodward Cup background, will play at three. The Templeton golfer won the Canterbury under-21 title last season and soon after won the national final of the Eagle Society’s junior tournament in Wellington.
Warwick Sherwood (Waitikiri), Brett Tucker (Christchurch) and John Hazeldine (Russley) were all considered good enough to play for their clubs in the Woodward Cup contest last year, and they had good records for Town and Canterbury in junior matches.
