Group to study Auckland Is.
PA Wellington A 16-member scientific expedition will call at the Auckland Islands next week. The island group, 470 km south of Bluff, is managed by the Lands and Survey Department as a nature reserve. The group would leave Lyttleton on Wednesday aboard H.M.N.Z.S. Waikato which would also call at neighbouring Campbell Island, said the expedition leader, Mr Dave Bamford, of the department Mr Bamford said some
expedition members would study wild goats on the island to establish first whether it was worth while to remove any of them for breeding. The department wanted eventually to remove the goats from the island to protect the native flora, he said. Members of the D.S.I.R. Soil Division in Lower Hutt will study soil in the northern part of the island.
Otago Museum scientists will study the island’s yellow-eyed penguin, and Otago University entomologists will study aquatic insects and ecology. An archaelogist, Mr Neville Ritchie, of the Historic Places Trust, will look at sites proposed for a possible ranger station to ensure they are not important archeological areas.
