Bill Clifton, folk musician

Bill Clifton, a worldtravelled country musician will give one concert in Christchurch on Sunday.

He will play at the Banks Peninsula Folk Club-sponsored concert at the State Trinity Theatre at 8 p.m. A lead vocalist, guitarist and autoharp-player and a living encyclopedia of old-time and bluegrass music, he started his career at the age of 18 on a local radio station in Charlottesville, Virginia. Since then his commitment in life has been to rediscover old songs which have formed the basis for the revival of

interest in traditional country music today. The songbook he put together in 1955 has been used for many recording sessions and is commonly referred to as “the Bluegrass bible.”

Bill Clifton formed his first group, The Dixie Mountain Boys, in the early 1950 s and from 1953 was the featured performer on West Virginia’s alternative to the Grand Ole Opry, the World’s Original Jamboree. Since then he has sung in many countries and appeared at festivals as well as given radio, television and concert appearances.
