School bullies

Sir,—Shortly schools will be reopening. Allow me to draw attention to the age-old problem of the playground bullies and victimisers who are making life at school a hell for some children. They have always existed, but the latest generation of these unpleasant types is worse than the last. Disturbed homes, the weakening of respect for school authority, and the influence of television all have played a part. The victims, often those who are different or bear a handicap, are sometimes too afraid to report on them. I cannot urge too strongly upon teachers and school administrators the importance of keeping this problem in check. Good communication with pupils, adequate playground supervision and a team of prefects who are loyal to school and pupil interests are essential. As for dealing with the bullies, perhaps a greater use of the school’s ultimate weapon — expulsion — would not be out of place.— Yours, etc., GEOFF LEICESTER. January 25, 1986.
