Record 12m fleet for race
NZPAAAP Perth A world record fleet of 13 12-metre yachts gave Perth yachting afficionadoes their first taste of an America’s cup summer of Fremantle on Sunday.
America 11 - sent here to try to regain the America’s cup for the New York Yacht club - showed that she could bring off the mission by winning the Australia Day Trophy over a full America’s Cup course.
The white-hulled New York yacht won by 39, seconds from Australia 11.
The sensation of the race, however, was the performance of the “rebel” yacht, French Kiss, which, though banned by the Royal Perth Yacht Club from starting, took her place in the star-studded fleet and led at the fourth, fifth and seventh markes before her mast snapped as she sped towards the finish line.
Though she had probably been headed by US 44 and perhaps Australia 11, French Kiss - excluded because her “naughty” name smacked of advertising - showed that a French boat could be in the America’s Cup challenger final.
The 13 twelves made a spectacular sight as they headed towards the start line on a perfect day for 12-metres — a 10 to 12knots sou’-wester.
The two new fibreglass New Zealand yachts, crossed the line in first and third positions, split by French Kiss.
