Beiliss has to fight for titles

PA Auckland Peter Beiliss and his Aramoho clubmate, Keith Slight, won the Manurewa Bowling Club’s invitation pairs title for the fourth time yesterday. However, the scratch Christchurch combination of Lance Main and Bernie Johns gave them the fight of their lives.

Beiliss, who won the 18-end final of the Macleay Duff tournament, 18-16, said later: “The better side lost.”

A lucky four on the tenth and when he was down one shot gave Beiliss a 13-7 lead, but he could score on only two further ends as Main and Johns continued to outdraw their favoured opponents. Johns, a last-minute replacement for the injured Neville Poole, teamed with Main in a pairs event for the first time and they went through to the final unbeaten. The southerners trailed, 05, after two ends and 2-9 after seven.

Johns capitalised on the good lead work of Main to pick up a two and a three to close to 7-9 after nine ends.

Then came the crunch. Johns was holding shot when Beiliss drove, sinking the kitty in the ditch and, with the back bowls, picked up a four. He.: repeated the effort two ends later when he took out the shot bowl and went ahead, 17-9. swin-r.C-? Results.—
