Records fall in Canty championship

Three of Canterbury’s most talented young swimmers produced the most enlightening swimming at the second, third, and fourth sessions of the Canterbury championships at Queen Elizabeth II Park pool on Saturday and yesterday. Dallas Hibbs (New Brighton Hertz) and Linda Robinson and Phillippa Langrell . (both Wharenui) each broke records during the sessions. Hibbs broke three records to add to the one he broke on Friday evening, and Robinson and Langrell broke one each. Squads from Nelson and Blenheim competed at the championships and they returned home with a number of placings, a reward for dedicated training. Swimmers in the two squads showed that they do not nave to belong to a large club or big centre to be able to produce commendable times. The swimming of Hibbs has been a feature of the championships. At 12 he is only of average size, but his times have belied that. The new time he set in the 200 m freestyle on Saturday was his most outstanding effort. At 2min 11.89 s he was well inside his old record of 2min 15.595, and compared more than favourably with the winning time in the open men’s event of 2min 1.635. Hibbs broke records also in the 100 m butterfly and 200 m backstroke. His new butterfly record was Imin 7.065, 0.60 s better than his old mark. His backstroke record was 2min 30.375, which was 3.13 s better than the record held by Craig Watson. Brett McGuigan (Avon Aquatics) has had a successful championships so far. He won both the men’s 100 m and 200 m freestyle, beating some more favoured candidates in the process. Grant Forbes and Paul Tozer (both Christchurch) had a sterling battle in the final of the men’s 200 m individual medley. Tozer, in his specialty event, was narrowly beaten by Forbes in a disappointing time. Forbes added a second title when he won the 100 m butterfly. Matthew Davenport (New Brighton) had a lucrative two days. He won three of the four titles decided. in the boys 13 years section, all in good times.
