Mediation sought

The Public Service Association hopes to refer a dispute involving meat inspectors at the Ashburton plant of Canterbury Venison, Lid, to mediation.

The dispute involves the interpretation of the meat inspectors’ shift agreement with the Agriculture Department and the State Services Commission.

Meat inspectors decided on Wednesday to ask P.S.A. executive officers for approval to serve Canterbury venison with 14-days notice of a ban on shift work. . Mr John McKenzie, the Canterbury regional secretary of the P.S.A., said yesterday that he hoped to hear only this week if arrangements for mediation could be made.

Mr Tony Kirk, acting secretary of the Canterbury, Marlborough, Nelson and Westland branch of the Meat Workers Union, said yesterday that an earlier report of the dispute incorrectly stated that there had been resistance to the shifts from meat workers.

Meat workers at the plant unanimously supported the agreement that had been made with the company over shift work, he said.
