Transplant patient gives chase
NZPA-PA London
A transplant patient in Wales, Mike Ward, put his new heart to the test by chasing a suspected shoplifter for nearly a kilometre. A supermarket manager, Mr Ward, aged 29, sprang into action when a man grabbed a bottle of brandy and bolted from his store at Bridgend. His high-speed sprint took him down the street and across a rugby pitch, until his quarry ran into a river.
Without worrying about his heart, Mr Ward plunged into the water and plucked his captive to safety.
“The new ticker did me proud, and I wasn’t even breathing heavily,” said Mr Ward, of Talbot Green, midGlamorgan. He was given a new heart in an operation at Harefield Hospital by a surgeon, Mr Magdi Yacoub, 2% years ago.
“It was quite a run, but I didn’t think twice about it because I try to keep myself fit,” said Mr Ward.“l don’t know what the doctors will say, but I feel absolutely fine.”
