Dramatic yachting success
PA Tauranga In a dramatic day at sea off Mount Maunganui, a Victoria University student of Wellington, Greg Flynn, snatched a last minute victory in the 1986 New Zealand laser yachting championship yesterday. Winning both races sailed during the day, Flynn took the championship by just .75 of a point from an Onehunga engineer, Mark Oliver.
The series hung in the balance until the final moment. Overnight Oliver held a handy points lead and yesterday needed only one second placing to take the series and win his second New Zealand title.
However, Flynn, the 1981 Tanner Cup champion for P class yachts, was unstoppable. The best Oliver could manage in the morning’s seventh race was a third placing. The Wellington man was again in control in the afternoon’s race, a resail of the fifth race abandoned on Thursday because of lack of wind. To take the title Oliver had to finish fourth or better, but in a very tight finish he came home in fifth place.
