Lizards ‘vanish’

PA Tauranga Surveillance on islands in the Bay of Plenty and Hauraki Gulf will be stepped up, after the disappearance of a tuatara population, says the Wildlife Service.

The conservator of wildlife for the central North Island, Mr David Stack, said tuataras on Whenuakura Island, near Coromandel Peninsula, had vanished. It was .believed they had been stolen and smuggled out of New Zealand.

Mr Stack said people had landed on island sanctuaries where landing was prohibited.
