Job discrimination
Sir,—Recently, I applied for a job of a few weeks duration with a Government department. I passed a written test completely correctly and answered oral questions to the apparent satisfaction of the two male interviewers. However, when it was discovered that I had two small children I was immediately dismissed as potentially unreliable, despite my assurances to the contrary. At no time during my husband’s job interview was it ever suggested to him that he might be unreliable because he has two children. My husband shares half the housework and half of the childcare, yet because of employer attitudes I am unable to make my own financial contribution to the household. The theory of equal job opportunity exists, but the practice is sorely lacking. — Yours, etc.,
SHARON E. HUNTER. January 16, 1986.
