Stud ram fair entries back

Entries in this year’s Canterbury stud ram and ewe fair have declined by 67 from last year’s record total, mainly as a result of a cut back in the number of Corriedale rams. Corriedale breeders have decided to reduce the number of Corriedale rams offered at the fair to prevent a large number of passings. Breeders believe there is a market for about 50 stud Corriedales and have entered 48 rams this year compared with 83 last year.

Total entries for the twoday fair are 456 compared with 523 last year. The meat breed section of the fair will be on January 23 followed the next day by wool-breed sheep. The fair will include the national Hampshire, Dorset Down and South Dorset Down sales and the South Island Suffolk sale. Poll Dorset and Southdown sheep will be sold on January 22. Brucellosis testing will be compulsory at the Canter-

bury fair for the first time. All rams must either come from an accredited brucel-losis-free flock or have no palpable lesions of epididymitis and have received a negative test for ovine brucellosis. Entries are: Hampshire 22 (33 in 1985), Dorset Down 51 (58), South Suffolk 57 (56), Suffolk 60 (67), South Dorset Down 23 (30), Romney 77 (68), Border Leicester 85 (99), Lincoln 13 (9), English Leicester 20 (19), Corriedale 48 (83).
