Thieves spoil holiday
Two young English tourists had the bottom drop out of their New Zealand holiday after thieves broke into their camper van on the Port Hills on Tuesday evening.
Jonathan Slater, from Devon, and Geoffrey Green, from Birmingham, had left the van parked beside the Summit Road while they went rock climbing on Castle Rock.
They returned three hours later to find a side window smashed by a rock and the vehicle ransacked. Among the missing items were their passports, travellers’ cheques, English and United States currency, personal papers, driver’s licences, cameras, and an address book.
“The most annoying thing is losing the addresses of all the people we were going to visit,” said Mr Green. “We can replace the money, but it would take months to get even some of the addresses again.”
The pair are staying in Christchurch in the hope that the address book and their passports might turn up after the thieves realise that they have no monetary value. They are offering a reward for the return of any of the stolen items.
