SIDELINES
THREE WORLD RECORDS have been adjusted by the International Amateur Athletic Federation before being ratified. Steve Cram of Great Britain, who set a record for the mile in Oslo last July and Said Aouita, of Morocco, who set a record for the 1500 m in West Berlin in August have both been established one hundredth of a second slower than the declared times. The records will be 3min 46.32 s and 3min 29.46 s respectively. The women’s 400 m hurdles world record, set by Sabine Busch of East Germany in East Berlin last September, has been set one hundredth of a second faster than the declared time. The record is 53.555. HUTT VALLEY is the first holder of the Jimmy Cotter Memorial Trophy to be contested annually between that team and Auckland when they first meet at the national men’s softball tournament each year. The trophy is in memory of the former Hutt Valley and New Zealand softballer who died tragically in a car crash near Auckland last September. Cotter, aged 26, was a member of the New Zealand team which won the world title in Midland, Michigan, in 1984. He was also a fine rugby player, representing both Wairarapa-Bush and Wellington and was a Junior All Black in 1978. PETER GRIGG’S long vigil behind the stumps for East-Shirley for the last six seasons has ended, at least temporarily. The regular senior wicket-keeper has effected 142 dismissals since first taking the gloves in the 1979-80 season, the result of 129 catches and 13 stumpings. He has given way to the youthful Mark Barrett, who has been promoted from second grade. Barrett has also made his mark in indoor cricket. WHEN CANTERBURY B met South Canterbury in the Headifen trophy section of the national softball championships at Porritt Park last week, the players had a special reason for wanting to win and for gloating when they did. Earlier in the season the A side had met South Canterbury twice and lost twice in extra innings. The Canterbury B coach, Bryan Mountford, admitted beforehand that the South Canterbury game was the one his players desperately wanted to win and they did so by a handsome 8-1 margin. SIMPSON GUILLEN’S contention on the movement of presiding umpires when scoring shots are played in top cricket matches ("The Press,” January 15) was not borne out by the Australian umpires in the one-day international at Sydney the same day. They consistently moved to the side of the pitch on which the ball had been hit, which "Sam” Guillen claims can lead to obstructing the field. But, in his favour, is the case of Pat Carrick this week. She was umpiring a Canterbury B match and, after moving to the side of the pitch on which the ball was hit, had the misfortune to be struck in the back by the fieldsman’s return to the bowler’s end.
