Silver Tip has class to complete rich sprint double

By

J. J. BOYLE

Silver Tip will complete one of the most spectacular sprint doubles of the season if, as expected, she wins the Wellington Racing Club’s Wrightson Handicap tomorrow.

She showed she was one of the emerging stars of the powerful O’Sullivan stable in bringing off a lightweight’s victory in the Auckland Racing Club’s Railway Handicap in January 2. She translated her brilliant turn of speed into an Ellerslie track record of 1:08.37 for 1200 m and a winning margin of close to three lengths. A win for Silver Tip tomorrow would give the O’Sullivan stable its fourth win in the last six years in the big Trentham sprint. High Regards won for the stable last year, Our Shah in 1982 and Anderil in 1981. From what she has shown so far Silver Tip must rate favourably with the other sprinters which have distinguished themselves in their racing from the famous Matamata stable. Final Affair is one of the more interesting runners in a distinguished line-up against Silver Tip tomorrow. He was fourth in the Railway Handicap at Ellerslie finding, like many others have done, a wider barrier all too daunting. To make things worse he was slow from his stall and at half-way he was giving the tearaway pacemaker, Princess Dram, a start of over 20 lengths. Final Affair was attempting to complete a rich Auckland sprints double when he contested the Railway Handicap. At his previous start he brilliantly won The Concorde at Avondale, carrying 57kg and cutting out the 1200 m in 1:08.57, a track record. Clear Gold, one of those closest to Final Affair in the weights, has a Trentham record to match his impressive physique.

The big seven-year-old from Matamata has distinguished himself mainly as a metric miler, but flew home late for third in last year’s Wrightson Handicap. A wide barrier this time might not be anything like a disadvantage for Clear Gold, because he will probably drift out early, then dive at them late. Riccarton’s Noble Note will probably show the same racing characteristics at this distance. DRAWN WIDE Like Clear Gold he has drawn wide, but he has a big finish and it could have some extra sharpness about it with the weight relief he gets going into a field of quality.

Princess Dram has drawn No 2 and there is little doubt she will beat most if not all the others for early speed. Silver Tip showed superior finishing speed in the Railway Handicap, but there was much to admire in Princess Dram’s battle to last it out as well as she did for third after having extravagant demands made on her early. Magnitude and Atrapar were being brought back to 1200 after failing on footing not to their liking in the Flag Inns Trophy, 1600 m at Ellerslie on January 2. They have the class to make them two of the stronger chances from the’ Central Districts. One of the best below Silver Tip in the weights should be the Hawera-trained Ikon. Wins at her last two starts show that this five-year-old daughter of the high-class sprinter, High Delight, is back to the form that carried this mare to an impressive win in the Cuddle Stakes at Trentham two seasons ago. Sharing 50.5 with Ikon is Miss Etoile, a three-year-old speedster from Levin. She was a close second to Pinson and had Final Affair and Clear Gold behind her in the weight-for-age McGill 1200 m at Rotorua on October 26, and has won over 1150 m at Te Awamutu at her only start since. S.I. FORM South Island holiday form will capture much attention in thoughts about the Terrace Regency Hotel Handicap, first leg of the T.A.B. double. The Ashburton-trained Sea Swift easily beat 14 rivals over 2600 m in the Invercargill Gold Cup. The fact that she ran the distance in 2:40.51, a New

Zealand record, and did the job in such style, suggested this stoutly-bred Auk mare has qualities to meet the demands of stiffer competition, as will be offered by northerners tomorrow. Bi Noble, the runner-up to Sea Swift in the Invercargill Cup, is one of only two other four-year-olds in the field. Prince Majestic’s younger brother has been brought along on a carefully planned programme, and might be capable of more improvement as a result of his two appearances at holiday meetings. Gold Lomond, Run For Cover, and Threesome give Waikato stables a strong presence.

Gold Lomond was a good fourth in this race last year and returns to Trentham as

a last start-winner. He was successful' at Avondale last Saturday.
