NZPA-AAP Adelaide Wildlife officers fear ' organised gangs are illegally exporting peregrine falcons from Australia to supply a “sport for kings” racket in the Middle East. Arabs are understood to pay up to |50,000 for the birds. Suspicions that Australia is being used to feed the market have increased after the disappearance of young chicks from national parks in South Australia. The head of the National Parks and Wildlife Service law-enforcement section, David Barrington, said that in South Australia last year, five nests containing juvenile birds had been discovered missing and racketeers were believed responsible. Mr Barrington said that coupled with the destruction of the falcons’ habitat, thefts by egg collectors and the shooting of the birds by taxidermists, pressure was being put on the survival of the species in Australia. “I don’t know that they will become extinct with the present level of exploitation, but it’s sufficient to cause us concern and want it stopped,” he said:
