BP to seek gold in Central rock

PA Dunedin BP Oil New Zealand, Ltd, is poised to begin a hunt for gold in the area near Palmerston known as “Lot’s Wife.” BP will this week begin advertising its exploration licence application to the Minister of Energy. The application will be made tinder the Mining Act, 1971, to look for hard-rock gold deposits associated with tungsten deposits in schist. The licence, for one year, covers an area of 244.2 square kilometres of what is

at present tussock pasture farmland in the Waihemo and Silverpeaks counties. Copies of the application are at the offices of both the county councils and also the office of the Inspector of Mines and Quarries in Dunedin. The area is between Palmerston, Waihemo, Macraes Flat, and Middlemarch.

Stage one of the exploration will be by general reconnaisance, and stage two will involve more detailed exploration of any areas thought to be worth a closer look.
