Snedden omitted
NZPA Sydney Martin Snedden, who has played in 47 one-day internationals, might have been better off playing Shell Trophy cricket rather than accompanying the New Zealand side on its World Series Cup campaign in Australia. Snedden was yesterday omitted from the side to play against Australia in the day-nighter at the Sydney Cricket Ground tonight. His selection in the tour party was under a cloud just before departure but he passed a doctor’s fitness test and was cleared by the secretary of the New Zealand Cricket Council, Graham Dowling. The New Zealand cricket
manager and tour selector, Glenn Turner, said yesterday that all players had been considered for selection. At Melbourne, Snedden was not selected because it was said he was short of a bowl. He has since looked sharper at net and open wicket practices and he could be considered unlucky not to get a chance tonight. He will now be striving to play his first match at Perth where New Zealand plays India and Australia on successive days. His Auckland team-mate, Jeff Crowe, makes his opening appearance on tour at the expense of Bruce Blair
and both spinners are included in the 12. Otago’s Stephen Boock or, to a lesser extent, Auckland’s Stuart Gillespie are the front runners for twelfth man. Turner believed Australia would play Queensland’s Glenn Trimble, ahead of the slow-scoring batsman, Geoff Marsh, after being brought into the squad at the expense of the run-starved vice-captain, David Hookes. The New Zealand team is: John Wright, Bruce Edgar, Martin Crowe, John Reid, Jeff Crowe, Jeremy Coney (captain), Richard Hadlee, John Bracewell, Ervin McSweeney, Stuart Gillespie, Stephen Boock, Ewen Chatfield.
