Spanker On fancied in small field

Special correspondent Auckland With only five engaged to compete against him, Spanker On has a second-to-none chance of extending his already formidable record on the track when he contests the first leg of the TA.B. double at the Waikato Trotting Club’s meeting at Claudelands this evening. In two subsequent starts following a brilliant frontrunning double at the Auckland Trotting Club’s Christmas meeting, Spanker On has finished fourth and sixth in two flying mile events. His fourth placing was at Alexandra Park on December 30 when, after racing without cover for a good part of the way, the winner, Borana, recorded a swift 1 min 58.4 s for the journey. Last time out, Spanker On

was a solid sixth in Our Mana’s 1 min 57.9 s Lion Red Flying Mile at Cambridge on January 2. On that occasion, too, Spanker On had a hard run, racing very wide without cover.

Spanker On’s well-known proficiency at Pacemaking should see him start a dominating favourite for the Huntly Hotel Mobile Pace, which will be run over 2500 m.

It is well-remembered that Spanker On scored brilliantly on both nights of this meeting last term, when driven by Tom Knowles. Knowles was driving the gelding following the injury of his trainer, Peter Wolfenden, earlier on the first night of the meeting. The tight Claudelands circuit suits Spanker On’s style of racing and with Peter Wolfenden back in the sulky again, the combination should cement their place

as one of the early favourite’s for the $250,000 Max Harvey Auckland Cup, which will be run early next month.

Frederick, a capable young pacer, could manage no better than eighth at Cambridge on January 2 last time out, but his previous form, including an unlucky fifth in the New Zealand Messenger and a third to his brilliant stablemate, Placid Victor, at Alexandra Park on December 30, has been promising. The scratchings of King Alba and Shineover will al-, low Spanker On to start from No. 2 behind the mobile barrier, with Frederick at No. 4. Ben has been slightly disappointing recently following some useful form before Christmas and with a peak effort he could run Spanker On and Frederick close.
