Cheap cask wine ‘on the way out’

PA Auckland Winemakers are warning buyers that the days of the cheap wine cask are on the way out. The Government’s $lO million vine uprooting scheme will start mopping up the 25 million litre wine surplus soon, says the Wine Institute’s director, Mr Terry Dunleavy. Mr Dunleavy said the plan would let companies return to a “realistic’’ pricing system. The wine surplus at present would satisfy two years demand. Mr Dunleavy said wine

prices might start to increase in March if the Government’s vine extraction scheme was successful. “When the supply of grapes and the demand for wine are brought into a reasonable balance, companies can stop this suicidal price cutting we have seen recently. “Unless they increase profitability, we will not have a wine industry,” he said. Mr Dunleavy would not predict how far prices would rise but said low to medium-priced wines would be affected most.
