Hydro storage up because of rain
PA Wellington New Zealand’s recent rains have increased hydro storage markedly, cut generation costs and filled Lake Taupo full to overflowing, reports the Ministry of Energy. - It said yesterday that storage had risen during the last few weeks from 48 per cent of nominal full on December 16 to a present table of 76 per cent over all. In the South Island storage rose from 38 to 71 per cent and the North Island storage showed a rise of 92 to 98 per cent. Lake Taupo is in the flood range with a 108 per cent nominal full. Water from Lake Taupo is being released at a maximum rate with spill flowing into Waikato River stations. In the South Island spill is occurring at Roxburgh. The department reports that there is no conservation on water storage and
the cost of fuel to generate electricity at thermal stations this week was $56,600, compared with $362,200 for the previous week.
