Tommy Smith fined $l000
NZPA-AAP Sydney The premier trainer, Tommy Smith, was fined sAustlooo at Randwick after a sensational two-horse mix-up. The Smith-trained Baccarat was a late scratching in the Second Division of the Magnificent Handicap (1200 m after it was discovered the wrong horse had been, saddled up. A cadet steward, Brett Wright, checked the markings on the colt before the race and found that the horse was in fact Noblest Smith is in New Zealand but his stable foreman, Ernie Smith, stood in for him before the stewards.
It appears a stablehand inadvertently mixed up the two horses.
The repercussions would have been more serous had Baccarat started or even won.
