Printmakefs exhibit in U.S.
Nine New Zealand printmakers are hoping to break into the international market when their work goes on show in the United States this year.
The artists are to take part in New York’s massive Art Expo in April. Their work will compete for attention and status with material created by more than 1000 artists from Europe, Asia, North and South America, Africa and the Middle East. But Sir Ronald Scott, chairman of Peter Small, Ltd, the Christchurch-based company which is organising and underwriting New Zealand’s participation, is confident that the artists can hold their own.
“It is something of a journey into the unknown
because this sort of thing has not been done before. We will never know what the rest of the world thinks about us until we get in there and compete.
“However, I believe that New Zealand art, and especially the truly excellent pieces being produced by the top printmakers, is sufficiently strong that it can stand on its own in world company.”
The nine are Claudia Pond Eyley and Stanley Palmer, Auckland; John Drawbridge, Wellington; Graeme Stradling, Nelson; Barry Cleavin, Christchurch; Marilyn Webb, Ralph Hotere and Jeffrey Harris, Dunedin; and another Dunedin artist Robin White, who is currently living in Kiribati.
