Canoe’s position not known
PA Auckland The police and maritime emergency services could only guess at the position of the Polynesian canoe Hawaiki Nui late last evencrew of the 21m craft, a replica of early Polynesian voyaging canoes, failed to radio their position as expected. In their last call at 9.15 p.m. on Thursday, the canoe was 26 miles north of Cuvier Island, which is 24 miles east of Cape Colville at the tip of Coromandel Peninsula. The Coast Guard said there was no real concern for the crew’s safety.
