Welsh corgi ousted as New Zealand’s top dog
PA Wellington The Royal pet, the Welsh corgi, has lost its place as New Zealanders’ favourite dog breed, according to the Kennel Club’s 1986 Annual, Dog fashions have changed, and New Zealanders prefer to own German shepherds in the 1980 s, says the annual, the club’s first and marking its hundredth anniversary. sa Nearly three times more German shepherds were registered with the club in 1980 than any other dog breed. Cavalier King Charles spaniels were the second most popular dog
and Labrador retrievers third. The Pembroke Welsh corgi dropped to fourth in popularity in 1980 after 15 years as the most popular dog breed. Popularity depended on fashions and sporting considerations, the annual says, The Pembroke Welsh corgi grew in popularity in the 1950 nd 1960 s because the breed was owned by the Royal Family. The Labrador retriever has been popular because of sporting considerations. It made inroads on the popularity of the English and
Irish setter after World War
Minature poodles, Pekingese, pug and boxer dogs were all in the top 10 up to 1980, but have since lost popularity. The top 10 breeds listed in the annual were: German shepherd, Cavalier King Charles spaniel, Labrador retriever, Pembroke Welsh corgi, cocker spaniel, golden retriever, Shetland sheepdog, German shorthaired pointer, Dobennann, minature long hair dachshund.
