Peel Forest roads open
Roads in the Peel Forest area of South Canterbury have been reopened after being cut by floodwaters on Thursday. Both approaches to the Kowhai Stream bridge were washed out on Thursday, cutting road access to a farm and about 20 holiday houses at Peel Forest. A Lands and Survey Department ranger, Mr Dave Massam, said last evening that access across the bridge, had been restored by 5 pm. yesterday and several holidaymakers had already used it “Gravel round the bridge over the Kowhai. Stream was removed so that the
water is now running under the bridge,” he said. “A new channel for the stream has been dug and both approaches to the bridge filled in.
“It now remains for the Strathallan County Council and South Canterbury Catchment Board to plan a long-term future structure for the stream, 'rhe road to the Blandswood baches and look-out is also open.”
Mr Massam said that if heavy rain fell again within the next few days motorists should take care when approaching the stream and make sure it was safe to cross.
